For the good of the community and the surrounding area, what type of new business would like to see built here if you could have your choice? Who would it appeal to and what main age group would it be aimed at? I have a reason to be asking this question and it is a serious quetion. Please, none of the sarcastic remarks that appear on here so often. I really am searching for some information and maybe you can help.

I really would like some input as to what kind of business needs to come to Palacios and who it would be targeted at. I know some of you have expressed in discussions with your family and friends that you sure wish that Palacios had ____________business or ____________to do. Tell me what those blanks need to fill them in. Some thoughts might have been, movie theater, Blockbuster rentals, bowling alley, skatepark, racetrack or something such. Let me know.

I have been considering your question, and it occurs to me that your area of expertise may be your solution. Port Lavaca owes a lot of their growth to the constant promotion of their city by car dealership advertising. Much money enters their economy from perspective car buyers who shop, eat, and spend on other activities and attractions while in town. Sales tax revenue for the city is boosted by big ticket sales. Jobs are created as the need for sales, service, and support personel grows. Perhaps a car dealership is just what we need.

I have been out of the car business for about three years now after 23 years in it. I have a lot of contacts that could be helpful in something like that. When in town the last time I only saw one small used car lot that did not impress me. I have even thought of something like a Kia dealership somewhere other than a large metropolitan area because the price point falls into more peoples range. I have another idea I am working on and do not want to disclose it yet as it still needs more support from some financial backing and I have not secured that yet. I would not want to announce something and then have to retract it and disappoint the whole area and myself. I still need more input as to what people would really like to see in town. I am not saying I can get it done. But, if it is doable, I know some people who are looking.....................

It would be nice not to have to go to Bay City or Port Lavaca for a change.

I know they help out during hurricanes and other natural disasters so they are well aware of Palacios and the surronding area. From my research I have found that roughly 40,000 people live with a 30 mile radius of Palacios so that could be a good draw. My background is 20 years in the supermarket industry and 23 years in high end auto sales so I have a little knowledge of how H.E.B. might think. They have to consider population, employment, costs of shipping, demographics and a vast amount of other things. With the renewed interest in the Tres Palacios area, maybe contacting their real estate/planning division might not hurt.

Perhaps also extend to Houston, Port Lavaca and Victoria. This city is going to expand one day and with the price of gasoline and diesel, it would probably be much more cost effective to pay the fares for public transportation. However, we must first encourage our city to help fund such an endeavor and they won't do that without a strong show of support for the idea.

It needs a REAL place for the youth to gather, have fun and stay out of trouble. Palacios kids are always in trouble, and with something to do, that may stop. How about a family funplex? Games, a movie theater, pizza joint etc all in one? Save that gas to Bay city or PL.... families need a place to gather... built it and they will come..

There are not enough employment opportunities for them. Attracting businesses that will attract more businesses has to be a priority. They say money can't buy happiness, and that it's the root of all evil, but it's always the economically depressed areas that have the highest crime rates and the poorest educated children. Creating places for youth to go spend money will create a need for the youth to have more money. If they can't earn it, they WILL find a way to get it.

The youth do need a place to be able to gather together that will allow productive, enjoyable time. I know there is very little to keep the youth in town and not having to drive to other towns/cities to have something to do. Without something to do in Palacios they have to look elsewhere. That is a very good suggestion..........

Unfortunately, the shrimping industry is not the answer that it once was. You asked for something besides a political solution, but there is no solution without a political answer. In this age of deregulation of business and finance, greed is tolerated unabashedly, and investment monies are deployed to cheap foreign countries. And until we stand up to these greedy S.O.B's we, and thousands of more small towns are going to disappear. We have to make a stand for the working people of this country, and that means re-instating the restrictions on business and finance that existed before 1980's and Reaganomics. The good part is that the people have just kicked out of office those that are totally indifferent to the real life problems of the working poor and the middle class. Where we go from here is up to us. In an unfettered capitalist society, you get what you are willing to fight for. If you believe that Wall Street and the investor class is acting in your best interest, then you can expect more of the same. Remember: It's about having a disposable income independent of the necessities of life. Without that, no car dealership or any other look good, feel good solutions are ever going to solve the local problems. The labor movement of thew 20th century built the middle class, and forced the greedmongers to pay a living wage. When we get enough of living just at or even below the poverty level, and the streets of America are filled with the desperate, the situation will change. Are you ready for that?

Seems most of the people can not understand that the decisions made on the national level effects the conditions on the local level. Yet, the people still think that the conservatives' 19th century ideology, and belief in the "free market" system is the answer to 21st century problems! : If this so, then why are we still having to address the age old problems of poverty and inequality under the "unseen hand" of Adam Smith over 200 years later? The ignorant will subscribe to "personal responsibility", even though none of us on the local level had a say so in the migration of American jobs to cheap foreign labor markets. Jesus said it best, "There are none so blind as those who refuse to see"!

However, it never comes, and my dreams to live by the water fade as I get older. The reality, there are no Universities close by...so no firm requiring an educated market will ever come. They would spend to much money in recruiting and relocation. So let's think less skilled. Casino. Race track. Think Louisiana/ Kansas City "floating" casinos. Is it legal??? How about a theme park? Why visit Palacios? The reason I personally come home is to hang on the porch of our bayhouse and just watch and smell the ocean. That will be the same reason others want to come. To get away from something average...and visit something spectacular. And think...only 3 hours away. Why would you not visit? Your industry should be obvious. Your revenue will come from tourist and sales tax. The challange is to get all those individuals who are content with their $25,000 jobs or retirement checks...to change, and allow their community to prosper. Economic Development requires a wealth to manage. No wealth, no development. The city may require land give aways, or even concessions of some sort. But the ultimate gain is community wealth. With the goods, are bads. Does Palacios really want to give up it's quaintness...for a TGI Fridays? Initially, Palacios needs a plan. A well written and researched plan. One that could be executed in stages. Get an industy to commit~ and then move forward. Some towns to speak with: Park City, Kansas. Kansas City, MS. Lake Charles, LA. Kema, Tx. These cities are making it happen! Park City is in early stages of this development...but they have a vision and are making it happen. (yes, BTK serial Killer) Does Palacios have an Economic Development Committee, plan, organization? This is probably the root of the problem. Who, if anyone, is in charge? But, if you are thinking something to ease you into retirement...so that you can enjoy my dream of living on the ocean...the answer is...the Backdoor Liquor Store. A clean, well lite, store. Until you get more folks in the area, this is what will thrive.

However one fact is missing. No matter how many businesses have wanted to locate here recently, and there have been some, they haven't been able to. The City has neglected it's sewer and water systems for so long they are falling apart. The sewer lines are crushed and leaking into the ground. Two wells are damaged so bacteria can enter the water system. It's a boring subject but a city's utility system is the key to its future. It will be the key to any future development plans.

I thought Palacios was the best place in the world to live and I was sorry I left. I still would like to retire to Palacios, but I don't believe I could get my husband to move there because he doesn't fish, or like the sand. What does Palacios need? I believe I heard that the STP was going to build two more reactor units. Is this true? If it is, Palacios needs to be ready to entice the workers to live there instead of Bay City or Port Lavaca. Nice apartments More eating places A picture show Children's entertainment. (Chucky Cheese, entertainment park, a swimming pool.) Fix up the homes already there for renting or selling. Shopping downtown. You want to keep everything in a centrally located area and I love to go to small towns and shop neat antique, resale, craft or gift shops. There used to be a craft shop next to the Pharmacy and when I did get to Palacios I nearly always went in there and bought something. The ladies were so nice and the shop was full of good stuff. I saw where someone mentioned Wal Mart. If I lived in Palacios I would fight to keep Wal Mart out. They always build on a major highway and this would draw the potential shoppers away from downtown. A fabric shop with sewing machines and sewing supplies would be nice. Craft, scrapbooking, stamping or some of the other new hobby supplies. Does anyone do alterations??? A cleaners??? I mentioned small towns earlier in this post. At Christmas I decided to visit Boerne near San Antonio and it was the neatest place to visit. I did some Christmas and Birthday shopping. You already have the water to draw people in, play on that and go with it. These are just some (off of the top of my head)thoughts. No research or anything.
